Last year, a blood test indicated that my cholesterol level was 305 -- anything above 235 is dangerous and puts you at risk for a heart attack. I was shocked and scared. I read everything I could and learned some surprising things. I started eating healthier and got serious about exercise. After 6 months, my cholesterol level tested at 206 (borderline, but pretty close to normal, down 33%). Now, I feel like I'm on a good path for living a healthy, full life and I no longer worry about heart disease.
I created this site to tell my story. I have no medical training and I have not created this site to offer advice or sell a magic pill. I only hope that my story will inspire others to educate themselves, work with their doctor, and live a healthy, worry-free life by lowering their cholesterol.
My Story
I am young -- only 32 years old -- and have always been reasonably fit and eaten a reasonable diet. Unfortunately, heart disease and high cholesterol run in my family (both on my mom and my dad's side), but I always thought I was too young & ate too healthy for this to impact me.
Last year, my wife dragged me in for my annual physical. Two days later, the doctor called and asked me to come in the next day. I sat and listened as the doctor reviewed my cholesterol test. My total cholesterol was 305 (anything above 235 is considered high) -- not good, especially for someone at my age. I was shocked. I couldn't believe the numbers. Then it hit me...both of my grandfathers and several of my dad's brothers had died of heart disease. Then I got scared. "Am I going to die before I'm 50", I thought?
That same meeting, my doctor handed me a flyer of "good foods" and "bad foods". Looking at the list, I got so depressed. A lot of my favorite foods were in the "bad" column. I thought I'd never be able to eat anything good ever again. Since then, I've learned that the list was terribly out-dated. It didn't have the latest information about good fats vs bad and it didn't mention that there were foods I could eat that reversed the plaque build-up in my arteries. (More on this later, I'm getting ahead of my story!)
My wife and I started reading everything we could get our hands on. Books, web sites, news paper articles, drug brochures, and talking with so-called experts. There's a dizzying amount of stuff written on heart disease, some of it very technical and some of advice was contradictory. After absorbing it all, things started to make sense. We found a bunch of reputable sources that agreed on the basics. I decided I was going to try to reduce my cholesterol without drugs and using natural foods & supplements whenever possible. I decided to give myself 1 year to do this -- if it didn't work, I'd try a more aggressive approach, like taking drugs, etc.
I started eating a low-cholesterol diet and got into a regular exercise program. This was a change in life-style, but it wasn't drastic. I still ate out with friends and occasionally ate the so-called "forbidden foods", etc. I monitored my progress with cholesterol tests every 2 months. After 6 months, I was down to 206 (well below the risky mark)! I felt great! And felt healthier than I have felt in 10 years. While I still monitor my cholesterol, I feel confident in my health and I know that the changes I made will keep me healthier in the long run.
I decided to put up this web site to share my experience in hopes that it inspires and motivates others to lower their cholesterol. I have no relationship with the solutions or businesses I describe and created this site only to inspire others. If you're interested in trying some of the same solutions I used, please consult your doctor first.
